The Fairy Owlet Mother: Our Founder’s Story

In 2014, our founder Stacey Mae Rudge and her husband built a simple barn owl box in their backyard in Ramona, California. To their delight, a wild barn owl moved in and started a family.

Stacey set up a livestream to share their nightly adventures with friends—but word spread fast.

Before long, thousands of people around the world were tuning in to watch the owls nest, swoop, and raise their fluffy little owlets. The Ramona Barn Owls cam quickly became one of the most-watched nature livestreams in the U.S. and featured some of the cutest owls people had ever seen on camera. Stacey’s glittery hair extensions, fun, gentle, joyful presence earned her the nickname “The Fairy Owlet Mother.”

What began as a backyard hobby quickly grew into a passionate movement. Stacey’s playful curiosity and growing owl knowledge made learning about wildlife fun for all ages.

She’s rescued injured owls, raised orphaned owlets, and even helped release rehabilitated raptors back to the wild.

Ask her why she’s so driven, and she’ll tell you: “My passion is teaching people to use raptors for pest control instead of poison.”

That vision – a world where nature thrives without poison – guides everything we do at Ramona Barn Owls.

In 2023, Stacey launched the Ramona Barn Owls clothing line—not just to raise funds, but to spread the message further.

A portion of every sale goes directly to the Wildlife Research Institute, (WRI), a San Diego-based nonprofit dedicated to preserving wildlife through research, education, and advocacy. Their work helps rehabilitate owls and other wild species, giving them a second chance in their natural habitats.

Thanks to your support, we’ve already donated $2,700 (and counting) to both the WRI and San Diego Humane Society’s Ramona Campus (Project Wildlife)—funding efforts that align directly with our mission to protect owls through education, poison-free pest control, and hands-on rescue work.
